THE winners of an art competition organised by the Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre were announced at a special preview evening held in early July.

More than 70 guests viewed the exhibition which comprised of 80 pieces chosen from the original 100 submissions and there was a varied interpretation of the theme ‘A Moment in Time’ from the Welsh-based artists.

A panel of judges included Wrexham University art lecturer Wendy Connelly, Robin Bailey from Raw-I Studios in Chester, Brent Blair, owner of the Lion Street Gallery in Hay-on-Wye, and art restorer Chris Matchett.

Eventually, Charlotte Vickery was chosen as the winner for ‘Calidos Recuerdos’, which the judges felt was a challenging composition with an excellent use of a minimal palette, and with flashes of under painting adding vibrancy. She received a prize of £500, sponsored by local business Charcroft Electronics Ltd

Second prize of £250, sponsored by Lofftwen Forest Farm, was awarded to Barbara Simon for her work ‘Doorstep’; while third prize of £100, sponsored by Llanwrtyd resident Colonel Tim Van Rees, will be awarded as a result of a visitors’ choice vote.

Visitors to the Heritage Centre throughout July have the opportunity to view the exhibition and vote for their favourite. The display included a variety of mediums including work in oils, pastels, pencil, acrylics, litho-prints, photography, collage and mixed media. The panel of judges were impressed by the brilliant and creative photography and interesting technical pieces in addition to the more traditional work and felt that the standard was very high with wonderful pieces providing great variety and a superb exhibition. Particular commendation was given to Simon Lilly.

“We were delighted with the number of entries, diverse interpretation of the theme, various mediums used and the wide-ranging geographical response,” said Lynne Brookes, centre manager.

“We are so lucky that Wales has such a wealth of talent and creativity and the centre is honoured to have the opportunity to display some of this artistic ability through this competition.

“We hope that visitors will come to the heritage centre to view the exhibition and vote for their favourite.”

The exhibition runs throughout July. Opening times are Thursday to Sunday 10am-4pm.

TT Electronics: Price Adjustments

"On 25th March 2021, we published a letter informing our customers of the concerning trends within our supply chain with regard to raw material price increases, material availability and freight capacity and charges.

TT Electronics has absorbed these costs for a considerable time with the intention not to pass the increases along to our customers, and with the hope that this would only be a temporary challenge. Unfortunately, pricing of raw materials and freight has continued to increase and there is no indication that these issues will revert to a pre-COVID-19 condition.

We have now reached a point where we need to announce a ‘force-majeure’ event and take actions to maintain short and mid-term viability and sustainability of our business.

Therefore, we announce today that we will provide a new standard price book with validity from 1st June 2021 for all new orders. All special quotes will be automatically adjusted to reflect the necessary adjustments and updated copies will be provided accordingly."

Fpmds200

MTM Power has expanded its range of DC/DC converters with a new series that is tailor-made to meet the requirements in vehicle technology. Highest quality and safety are of particular importance when using power supplies in these applications. As a link between the supply system and the electronic subsystems, extremely high demands are placed on them with regard to their reliability. Due to the good price performance ratio and the excellent technical data, these converters, though, are increasingly used in stationary and industrial applications.

The new PMDS200-FT series can be flexibly used. The nominal input voltages are 48 V and 80 V. The existing input filter protects the devices against the typical transients occurring in on-board electrical systems. The standard output voltages are 12 V and 24 V. Other voltages, e.g. end-of-charge voltages for lead-acid batteries can be realised on request.

The low Ripple & Noise values combined with a high output voltage constant guarantee reliable operation of all connected consumers. Other decisive features are short-circuit resistance, transient protection, the insulation resistance of 1.18 kVAC prim.-sec. and a wide temperature range -35 ... 70 ° C (85 ° C on request).

The PMDS200-FT are designed in a plastic case with an aluminium base plate. They show a compact design (145 x 115 x 38 mm). The thermal concept of these vacuum encapsulated DC/DC converters provides an optimised heat dissipation of all power semiconductors by thermal coupling to the base plate. The encapsulated design allows installation on vehicles without suspension or without pneumatic tires with the highest shock and vibration stresses. The connection is made by cable, suitable plugs can be attached on customer request. The devices are CE-compliant and prepared for protection class 2.

KEMET’s New Surface Mount Safety Certified Ceramic Capacitors Provide Solutions for Space Constrained Mains Powered Applications

New devices offer smaller form factors to save space and simplify manufacturing versus competing leaded devices in AC line filtering applications

KEMET has launched a new range of surface mount device (SMD) safety certified multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for use in mains powered applications. The CAS series addresses widespread demand for miniaturization without compromising performance by offering higher capacitance, smaller overall size, and simplified assembly versus existing leaded disc devices, which represent the majority of safety-certified ceramic capacitors currently on the market.

According to market research*, the overall power supply sector is expected to grow to US $34.92 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 6.7% from 2018 to 2023. Within this, AC/DC power conversion is considered the largest and fastest growing type of power supply owing to its increasingly wide range of uses and applications. KEMET’s CAS series of SMD MLCCs offers important design and production benefits versus leaded disc devices for AC line filtering in this significant and expanding market.

To satisfy industry and consumer demand for portable solutions, PCB real estate for electronics and power delivery systems continues to shrink as designers put more functionality in smaller spaces. Commonly used safety certified leaded disc components are bulky compared with KEMET’s CAS series SMD MLCCs and are often not suitable for applications with restricted spaces in which filtering circuitry needs to be placed. Leaded disc devices also require pin-through installation into PCBs, a process that is not compatible with standard automated reflow profiles and therefore can result in additional production costs.

Filtering is important in mains powered products to manage unwanted transients, such as high frequency noise in both line-to-line (Class X) and line-to-ground (Class Y) applications. Safety certified capacitors are used in a wide variety of applications, such as power adapters for mobile devices, industrial power distribution, and electric vehicle power inverters.

“Until now, safety certified capacitor technology has not kept pace with advances in MLCC technology,” said Reggie Phillips, KEMET Senior Product Manager. “Our new CAS range allows engineers to place the essential mains-connected filtering capacitors into smaller spaces, thereby reducing board size. For manufacturing professionals, the benefit is that the new devices are compatible with standard reflow processes, eliminating an additional step in the manufacturing process.”

Charcroft samples ultra-stable Kemet KONNEKT™ technology capacitors

  • First ultra-stable KONNEKT U2J ceramic capacitors sampling now
  • Enable higher power densities in smaller form factors
  • Leadless multichip for high-efficiency and high-density power converters

Charcroft Electronics Ltd., – a specialist distributor and manufacturer of electronic components for harsh and high-end applications – is sampling the first release of Kemet’s KONNEKT technology capacitors. KEMET’s patented KONNEKT™ technology is designed to enable high power density by combining multiple components into a single surface-mountable package.

The KONNEKT U2J ceramic capacitors feature KEMET’s ultra-stable U2J dielectric to create a low-loss, low-inductance package capable of handling very high ripple current in the range up to hundreds of kilohertz.

The leadless multichip solution for high-efficiency and high-density power converters uses innovative Transient Liquid Phase Sintering (TLPS) which makes the capacitors compatible with existing reflow processes. The option to mount the KONNEKT U2J capacitors in a low-loss orientation increases their power-handling capability. It also provides lower Effective Series Resistance (ESR) and Effective Series Inductance (ESL) in addition to increasing the capability to handle ripple current.

The extremely stable KONNEKT U2J Class I dielectric material exhibits a negligible shift in capacitance across voltage and a predictable and linear change in capacitance across ambient temperature, with minimal aging effect. The family operates over a temperature range from −55 to +125 degrees Centigrade.

KONNEKT U2J capacitors are sampling now from Charcroft Electronics for qualified high-efficiency, high-density power converter designs. Samples can be requested from request@charcroft.com

NEW PRODUCT: KONNEKT U2J for High-Efficiency, High-Density Power Applications (Commercial Grade)

Overview

TKEMET's U2J KONNEKT surface mount capacitors are designed for high-efficiency and high-density power applications. KONNEKT utilizes an innovative Transient Liquid Phase Sintering (TLPS) material to create a leadless multi-chip solution. When combined with KEMET’s ultrastable U2J dielectric, KONNEKT enables a low-loss, lowinductance package capable of handling extremely high ripple currents in the hundreds of kilohertz. U2J is an extremely stable Class I dielectric material that exhibits a negligible shift in capacitance with respect to voltage and a predictable and linear change in capacitance with reference to ambient temperature, with minimal aging effect. Capacitance change is limited to –750 ±120 ppm/°C from –55°C to +125°C. U2J KONNEKT can also be mounted in a low-loss orientation to further increasing its power handling capability. The low-loss orientation lowers ESR (Effective Series Resistance) and ESL (Effective Series Inductance) which increases ripple current handling capability.

Class 2 MLCC dielectrics and the case of the missing capacitance.

Summary:

Most designers selecting an MLCC for their application will be familiar with the dielectrics being described as class 1 or 2, but may not be totally familiar with what this actually means, or what impact it can have. MLCCs are often advertised with their temperature co-efficient of ceramic (TCC) figure, but their voltage co-efficient (VCC) is often overlooked or ignored. In practise, even the TCC figure can be misleading and the VCC figure can have a much larger impact on the actual effective capacitance of the part. Here we consider what the 2 different characteristics actually mean, and what impact they can have.
